The Last Daf Car Made.

This is a photostory of the restoration of a 1976 Daf 46 called Butterscotch.

This is what I purchased in March,2005.

The car still had British plates.

Oh Oh...this sticker was on the windshield. This was not going to be a quick restoration after all.

Bringing Butterscotch home.

Rusty Fenders. So typical of Daf.

Starting the strip down process.

Making some repairs to the fender holes.

Fender repairs all done, it looks better now.

April,2005- I discovered a lot of hidden damage.

Why am I on the wrong side? This is the only RHD Daf 46 in the USA.

May,2005- I keep finding bad spots on the body.

Both sides of window have serious rust issues.

After taking the weathstriping off there was a lot of rot on the window sill.

Redoing the sills.

The door insides are getting done also.

This fender had been hit in the UK and filled over with tons of Bondo. It all has to come out.

Have to tackle the brakes next. Imagine that..two wheel cyliners on the front.

This is what the underneath looked like...coated with tar, dirty, oily and rusty.

Both headlight surrounds were rotted out. Need some repair time here.

Headlight surrounds all completed and ready for lamps.

Time to change out the Euro headlights for some American sealed beam units.

The front fender is getting back to it's original shape again.

Motor had to come out, it only ran on one cylinder.

Right side piston had a small issue with compression but that was taken care of quickly.

Painting up some of the engine parts while the motor is out.

Motor back in. Luckily it was only a minor problem.

850cc Air-Cooled motor cleaned and working 100%.

Right side of the 850cc Motor.

CV Boots need to be replaced. Original ones were plastic.

other side of CV was also changed.

CV shaft cleaned and repainted with new boots.

Nice new rubber CV boots installed.

I need a new exhaust system.

New custom exhaust ready to put in.

Variomatic needs a little attention also.

Variomatic all cleaned up & now to change the drive belt.

New Roulunds steel belt in place and ready to test.

Back to some body work- back end is really sad & rusted.

Entire new metal panels inside and out to repair the lower valance.

Some final touchup around the fender wells and test fit the rally wheels.

Body work pretty much done now, all stripped out for the paint booth.

Masking is complete and sanding is done.

Almost ready to spray on the "TERRANA" color.

The hood getting sprayed on the inside. Since spray painting is not my "bag" my friend Bill Halligan was given that job.

First coat of original color, "TERRANA". It was color matched on the computer using the inside trunk lid.

Back end looks awesome now and solid.

May,2007- Fresh out of the paint shop and all buffed out.

The paint job looks great. Now to put all the goodies back on.

"Butterscotch" looks almost new again.

All the body work finally completed.

Registered, inspected and ready for some fun.

Most of the goodies have been put back on, getting close to the end.

2009- I am making some modifications to the Windshield washer system by adding an electric pump & new switch to Butterscotch. The old system finally crapped out.

Interior is still original and in good shape for now.

Off to the first car show- June,2007.

The rally wheels painted.

New tires and wheels for the 46.

1976 DAF 46 & 1962 DAF 750 Pick-Up. 2007 Photo.

Rising out of the smoke of despair to return as a jewel. The 1976 DAF 46 has made a comeback.

1976 DAF 4623. Chassis # 4623-A50082. Engine # 85E-AK190027. Service # 462308. Build Date: 2/76.

July,2007- All the trimmings put on and "BUTTERSCOTCH" is ready.

Made a special sign for dash plaques and info on car.

2007- 26 months of hard work has paid off, first trophy.

2008- New and authentic period Dutch License Plate found for "Butterscotch".

This photo was taken by the Rutland Herald for an article which appeared in the Sunday paper on May 11th, 2008. Very Cool publicity!

And "Butterscotch" made a splash with Hemmings Motor News blog site when I took it to the June,2008 Cruise-In.
